Window Collage
inspired by Matisse
Let's make a collage that looks like stained glass windows and experiments with layers of paper and light. The shapes used are inspired by the artist Henri Matisse's work...
You will need...
-
Tissue Paper
-
1 or 2x A4 plastic sheets (A4 plastic document wallets work well)
-
1x sheet of white A4 card/ paper
-
1x sheet of black A4 card/ paper
-
Glue (PVA or Pritt stick)
-
Scissors

Start by cutting out shapes from the tissue paper, using the leaf shapes Matisse uses in his work.
Cut more shapes at once by layering the tissue paper.
Spread a thing layer of glue onto the plastic sheets. This will help the tissue paper to not rip and the glue should dry clear.
Layer the tissue paper onto the glued sheet. Spread them out and overlap them (you may need to add more glue to some parts).
On the black or white piece of paper draw 2 large shapes. I drew the leaf and bird shapes in Matisse's work.
I cut the pieces of black and white paper in half so that I could pair them up.
Cut out the inside of the shapes so that you are left with a large shaped hole.
You can cut of the shapes in little parts as you will only need the paper around the shape you cut out. This is called the negative space.
When the glue is dry, stick the black and white paper shapes on top of your tissue paper sheets.
Find a window space to stick up your finished work. Notice how the sunlight shines through the layers of tissue paper that are showing.
If you create more than one you can pair them together so you add more layers to your collage. Why not combine yours with a friends?
What do the shapes remind you of?
What is your favorite part of your work?
