Hanging Collage

Inspired by Picasso

Picasso created some collages but he was also known for his painted portraits of people... so why don't we combine them?

This activity will create a hanging 3D collage using layered paper, stuck on string to create an abstract face.

A mobile is a hanging structure.

First let's look at Picasso's portraits for inspiration of the faces we can create...

These portraits show people that are made up of unusual shapes but can still be identified as faces.

To begin with, use these images to draw some facial features that are inspired by Picasso's cubist style.

Once you have got gathered inspiration of your abstract facial features, collect your card and start cutting out your shapes.

The features can be quite large- they don't have to be small.

Make sure to layer different colored card. You can add features like swirls or eyelashes by gluing and layering different paper.

Draw around your layers to make sure you cut the correct size.

Keep any pieces of cut-outs you aren't using.

Once you have all of the facial features you would like, it is time to make the mobile structure.

Cut onw piece of string and tie to each end of the stick. This is what your mobile will hang on.

Tie 3 more pieces of string on the stick but this time hanging down.

Arrange your facial features where you want them to be placed on the string. Don't be afraid to put the features in a way that isn't 'normal'.

Stick them to the string by using sellotape on the back.

Ta Da! Hang your mobile up using the string hook at the top and see how your face collage looks...

Do you have spare pieces of paper left over from the shapes you cut out?

See if you can create a collage of abstract shapes using these leftover pieces of paper. These are called the negative space of the shapes you cut out.

You will need...

  • Colored paper or card

  • String

  • Pencil

  • Sellotape

  • Gluestick

  • A stick or straw

  • Scissors

The pieces of string don't have to be the same length...

How might the face look if the features were swapped around?

Experiment and make the shapes large, abstract and layered. How can you make unusual eyes, noses, lips, ears, cheeks?
